Celebrating 40 Years of VRMA: Shaping the Future of Vacation Rentals 

In 2025, VRMA proudly marks its 40th anniversary, a milestone that reflects four decades of innovation, growth, and collaboration in the vacation rental industry. Since our founding in 1985, VRMA has been at the forefront of connecting and empowering vacation rental professionals worldwide, fostering excellence and driving the industry forward. 

A Legacy of Leadership and Community 

For 40 years, VRMA has been the voice and heart of the vacation rental industry. From hosting groundbreaking conferences to providing best-in-class education and resources, our mission has always been clear: to elevate the industry and support the success of our members. Together, we’ve weathered challenges, celebrated victories, and transformed vacation rentals into a cornerstone of global travel. 

Looking Back: Milestones of the Past Four Decades 

We’ve come a long way in 40 years! Here are key highlights dating back to our founding in 1985, when a small group of like-minded hospitality professionals calling themselves “vacation rental managers” came together to lay the foundation for what would become VRMA.

  • 1985: The first VRMA event is held in Lake Tahoe 

  • 1986: The first board of directors is elected 

  • 1987: The board secures the association’s articles of incorporation; supplier companies exhibit at a VRMA event for the first time 

  • 1991: VRMA holds its first Western Conference in Point Reyes 

  • 1992: VRMA holds its first Eastern Conference on Sanibel Island; membership reaches 100 companies 

  • 1999: Membership reaches 500 companies 

  • 2000: VRMA holds its Annual Conference in Maui, the first time an event is held outside of the contiguous U.S. 

  • 2006: VRMA launches its Discover Vacation Homes initiative to raise industry awareness among consumers and travelers 

  • 2007: VMRA holds its largest Annual Conference to date in New Orleans, gathering 600 attendees 

  • 2011: VRMA holds its first European Conference in Rome 

  • 2013: VRMA updates its logo and modernizes its brand 

  • 2014: VRMA holds its largest Eastern Conference to date in Orlando, gathering 400 attendees 

  • 2016: VRMA updates its name and logo from the Vacation Rental Managers Association to the Vacation Rental Management Association, to reflect the rapidly expanding industry; launches the Arrival print magazine 

  • 2017: VRMA expands Arrival to include an online news site; begins to invest in and greatly expand its advocacy efforts on behalf of the industry 

  • 2018: VRMA membership reaches 800 companies; the Annual Conference expands to become the industry’s International Conference; launches the industry certificate program for vacation rental managers 

  • 2019: VRMA holds its first Executive Summit, gathering C-suite executives in Rancho Palos Verdes; launches an industry accreditation program and expands Arrival to include podcasts 

  • 2020: VRMA launches SafeHome and SafeCommunity guidelines to help create industry safety standards during the COVID-19 pandemic; launches Vacation Rental Week to commemorate and celebrate the industry 

  • 2021: VRMA launches the Right to Rent program to increase funding support for advocacy efforts; launches the Excellence Awards to recognize industry leaders; expands membership to include hosts 

  • 2022: Launches comprehensive online advocacy toolkit; membership reaches 1,100 member companies 

  • 2023: VRMA launches new website; completes national housing study and three economic impact studies to demonstrate the value of vacation rentals in the U.S. market 

  • 2025: VRMA celebrates its 40th anniversary and embarks upon developing its next strategic plan to lay the groundwork for future growth and success

A Life of Exploration, Innovation, and Dedication 


John Victor Kjellman was a man of remarkable talents and diverse accomplishments, whose life journey was defined by curiosity, resilience, and a commitment to both personal and professional growth. Born in Boston on September 27, 1939, to Victor H. and Mary C. Fuller Kjellman, John was the eldest of their children. At the age of 8, his family relocated to Henniker, New Hampshire, a small town that would leave an indelible mark on him.
